Who was a fashion hit and a miss at the Grammy Awards?

First Prev 1 2 Next Last
Jennifer Lopez was the best dressed at the Grammy Awards in the eyes of DJLT.

I deliberately missed Valentine’s Day because it is a load of nonsense! I’ve written stuff about it in the past. All I will say on this is that people, especially women, need to stop focusing on what people do on February 14 and look at what they do on the other 364 days in the year. Valentine’s Day is a joke and a revenue opportunity for retailers; so all I will say on this is to show your love all year round and that way you will not have to go out of your way on Valentine’s Day! Now onto a more interesting topic. No music aficionado could ever write an article at this time of year without addressing the recent Grammy Awards show. This year I will venture into the world of being a member of the fashion police. Journalists must, from time to time, challenge themselves! Here goes. I watched, saw some of the performances, some of the outfits and will give my opinions on all of this later, after the Top 20.Up to #1 is Like A G6 by Far*East Movement featuring Cataracs & Dev. Tumbling to #2 is Bottoms Up by Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj. You had to see Nicki’s wild outfit at the Grammys. Falling to #3 is Can’t Be Friends by Trey Songz.Improving to #4 is Raise Your Glass by Pink. Up to #5 its What’s My Name by Rihanna featuring Drake. Climbing to #6 is Firework by Katy Perry. Didn’t like her outfit and neither did the fashion police. But the song is hot and very popular. Holding at #7 is Rihanna’s dance anthem Only Girl In The World.Improving to #8 is Grenade by Bruno Mars who was dressed cool and avoided the ire of the fashion police. Ke$ha’s hit We R Who We R falls into the #9 spot. Topping out and tumbling to #10 is Louder (Put Your Hands Up) by Chris Willis, a monster dance hit.Advancing to #11 is Hold It Against Me by Britney Spears. Improving to #12 is Aston Martin Music by Rick Ross featuring Drake and Chrisette Michelle.Quantum leaping to #13 is Memories by David Guetta featuring Kid Cudi, still DJLT’s favourite track. Up to #14 is Who’s that Chick? by David Guetta featuring Rihanna. People need to check out this remixer/producer David Guetta. He seems to be the standard bearer these days; dropping hit after rockin’ hit.Falling to #15 is DJ Got Us Falling In Love by Usher (who won Best Contemporary R&B Album) featuring Pitbull. Slipping to #16 is Just A Dream by Nelly. Now the new tracks, starting with this week’s essential new jam. In at #17 is Moment For Life by Nicki Minaj. New at #18 is Higher, by Taio Cruz featuring Kylie Minogue and Travie McCoy. Love the punchy beat of this kicking new hit. New at #19 is Fall For Your Type by Jamie Fox featuring Drake. Tumbling to #20 is Dirty Picture by Taio Cruz featuring Ke$ha. It’s sad to see this track leave the top 20 because it has such a hot beat. Now back to this week’s word the Grammys. There were some good performances but all the post event PR was, and is, still about the outfits people wore. The biggest talk of the show was Lady Gaga’s Grand Entrance. Much was discussed about this and I thought her entrance in a large egg was clever, creative, created quite a stir and was without question the biggest talking point of the evening. So, like it or loathe it, she accomplished her aim, which was to generate attention to herself and to be the biggest story of the evening. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Marketing 101 for an entertainer. She already gets more PR than even Rihanna, so this is no surprise to me and is indicative of her desire to be the modern-day Madonna. She does imitate Madonna as well as other pop icons of the past and I see no issue with this as imitation is the highest form of flattery. Now onto the best and worst-dressed. I would have to say that J-Lo was the best dressed. A bit revealing yes, but her outfit was flashy and complimented her better than those worn by most other attendees. Next for me would have to be Kim Kardashian’s ‘J-Lo from a few years ago inspired’ gold gown. Kim Kardashian is FINE! I admit that being gorgeous helps, but in the spirit of imitation being flattery, and given that J-Lo’s dress was worn probably ten years ago, and given that it looked hot on her, she goes in at number two.Nikki Manaj’s outfit was kickin’ and also extremely creative. I loved the leopard skin get-up as it also created a lot of discussion. She’s a pretty girl and I applaud her sense of style and willingness to go away from a conventional gown.Rihanna looks great in almost anything and her look worked, with the red hair and the revealing dress with horizontal lines. Joan Rivers and the fashion police thought she could have done more but it’s hard being a celebrity because you have so many advisors and so much pressure to always look a certain way, with critics saying this and that, you almost can’t win.On the downside, the biggest loser for me was Ricky Martin with his ill-conceived choice of tight, fitted, shiny jeans or pants with a shirt tie and blazer. The tie didn’t sit right and/or wasn’t tied correctly. Also the whole world knows that he has come out of the closet; so there was no need to wear some outfit that also makes the statement! But maybe one of his boyfriends put him up to it! This sounds plausible. So, word to the wise entertainers. Dudes should stick to conventional tuxedos or very close derivatives thereof. The coolest way to avoid being dissed by the fashion police is to stay close to basics and originals and to wear something that matches the outfit of the lady on your arm.Ladies can be a bit more adventurous but they should leave alone stuff like Katy Perry’s attempt at being an angel, with wings, etc. She ain’t no saint, so don’t step out trying to look like an angel! If you’re going to go wild, do it like Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj go all the way, create a buzz and get all the PR. Older ladies should leave alone stuff better suited to younger females and act and dress their age. Peace out until next year...….....……DJLT.

Ricky Martin?s fashion sense raised eyebrows at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.
