The Montpelier Re Foundation has awarded scholarships worth a combined $15,000 to two Bermudian students.

Meteorology student Michael Cavin Johnston receives $9,000, while the Foundation awarded $6,000 to medical student Erek Tivon McLaine Fox. Both awards are offered for a period of two years.

Chris Harris, CEO of Montpelier Re, said: “Montpelier is pleased to continue its tradition of supporting young Bermudians in their pursuit of higher education. Both Michael and Erek are very deserving award recipients, and we wish them continued success as they work toward degrees in their chosen fields.”

The Montpelier Re Scholarships were launched by the Foundation in 2009 and are funded by Montpelier Reinsurance Ltd. They are open to full-time Bermudian students who meet academic requirements established by the Foundation and who are entering either the third or fourth year of a three- or four-year degree programme at an accredited university or college.

Mr Johnston is entering his third year of a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology at Penn State University. He interned at the Bermuda Weather Service and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences this summer. He is a graduate of Saltus Grammar School.

Mr Fox is entering his third year of a medical degree at Caribbean Medical University School of Medicine in Curacao, West Indies. During his studies he will complete 72 weeks of clinical residencies at Barnsley Hospital in the UK.

Mr Fox received a Bachelor of Kinesiology from Acadia University and was previously Head Boy at Bermuda Institute.

The Montpelier Re Foundation was established by Montpelier Reinsurance Ltd in 2003 to support charitable giving in Bermuda. The Foundation’s mandate is to support the youth of Bermuda through educational initiatives and programmes.
