BBC denies naming sex case defendant

Bermuda Broadcasting Company (BBC) was yesterday charged in Magistrates’ Court with naming the defendant in a sex case.BBC CEO Rick Richardson, appearing on behalf of the company, pleaded not guilty to two counts of naming a defendant charged with a sexual offence. Both charges related to broadcasts on January 4 this year.On that date, a 31-year-old St David’s man was charged in Magistrates’ Court with sexually assaulting an ex-girlfriend and denying her liberty. He denied both charges. The matter has yet to go to trial.It is an offence to identify a person charged with a sexual offence unless the person is either convicted or pleads guilty. The offence carries a maximum $5,000 fine.The case against the Bermuda Broadcasting Company was adjourned to be mentioned again later this month.
