June 21, 2012Dear Sir,Next year we will embark on another quest to name the next National Hero or Heroes to the distinguished list who have already been selected and celebrated.I would like for all the people of Bermuda to consider one individual. Who am I speaking about? Below are the following clues:l She founded this institution in the year 1919;l It was Bermuda’s first social services organisation;l It has been an important institution in Bermuda’s history;l It has been in existence for more than 90 years for the sole purpose of giving young boys who had no home a place to live; young boys whom she witnessed diving off the docks in Hamilton to retrieve pennies thrown by tourists on cruise ships;l This institution has had a few locations, most notably where the Heritage Hall on Dundonald Street is located now;l It expanded to add a Sunday school;l In 1929 it expanded to open Bermuda’s first day care nursery;l It provided a source of food and nourishment;l In 1931 it offered the first overnight care, hence gained the notoriety of a twenty-four hour foster home;l This institution provides leadership skills by enrolling young men into the 5th Bermuda Boy Scoutsl When of age they were enrolled in to the T.S Bermuda Sea Cadet Corp;l In 1934 this Institution had Bermuda first tag day to raise funds;l In 1950 it moved to its current location on King Street;l From 1992-1996 the Institution was closed for major renovations;l In the year 2000 they organise their first moon walk;l In 2008 this proud institution was accredited by the Bermuda National Standards Committee;l In 2011, it celebrated 92 years of existence.l It has provided hundreds of young boys and later girls a home for whatever reason that their families weren’t able too.l Noteworthy to add to this nominee is the years of support she received by volunteers who assisted her during and after she passed away.BROWNLOW ADDERLEYSouthampton
