Educators’ Councill to replace interim committee next month
The Bermuda Educators’ Council will elect a new slate of officers next month to replace the interim committee following months of turmoil. This after members resigned en-bloc earlier this year when BEC members charged with overseeing the licensing of teachers claimed they were caught in a tug-of-war between the Ministry of Education and the Bermuda Union of Teachers. The move prompted a threat by the Minister of Education Jennifer Smith to replace the BEC members if they did not resume their roles. In a statement issued in August, Ms Smith allocated a one month period to see whether “significant progress towards the resurrection of the Council” could be made.On hearing news of the planned election in October the Minister said: “I believe that their efforts to date are a clear indication that they have indeed made progress; as a result, I am willing to await the outcome of the elections.”In the interim she said she looks forward to the “re-establishment of this most important body”.
