West in form ahead of Chile tournament
Tour de las Americas player Eric West strung together two strong showings in Florida earlier this week to suggest he is peaking ahead of next week's $160,000 Sports Frances Open 50th Anniversary Tournament in Chile.
West finished third at the Florida Hospital Golden Gala pro-am tournament - sponsored by USA American Ryder Cup captain Paul Azingher - over the weekend and then went one better a day later by placing second in a Moonlightgolf.com Tour event.
The Bermudian pro carded 12 birdies and an eagle to finish the two-day Florida Hospital Golden Gala event at 138, six shots under-par. He then shot a one-under-par 71 hours later to narrowly miss out on a third win on the Moonlightgolf.com Tour this year.
The 25-year-old golfer was five shots under par through 11 holes but came undone with the putter over the closing holes.
"I really didn't putt that well coming in and it was actually really cool and windy," West said.
West gathered bogeys at the par five 12th and par four 18th and a double bogey at the par four 16th, leaving him to rue what might have been later in the clubhouse.
"I was actually really disappointed because I was putting pretty good," he lamented. "It was really frustrating and I should have won because 69 won the tournament. I only lost by two strokes.
With that bitter disappointment now a thing of the past, West has set his sights on next week's co-sanctioned Tour de las Americas and Canadian Tour event in Chile where he hopes do well.
"I feel pretty good and I have been putting a lot better in practice. My ball driving lately has been a little strange lately, I have been making some very uncharacteristic, bad drives," he added.
West qualified for the Tour de las Americas in March of this year and finished 12th at the Taurus Abierto de Peru in Peru last September - his best showing on the lucrative tour to date.
"I feel more relaxed and I am looking forward to competing in Chile," he added."
