Khano guns for former club Revs

Khano Smith has warned New England Revolution that he will be "so pumped up" when he makes his debut for New York Red Bulls who tackle his former club tomorrow.

Smith, 28, missed Red Bulls' season curtain raiser against another of his ex-teams Seattle Sounders through suspension last week and will now be looking to put one over on the Revs, where he enjoyed four successful seasons.

"Yeah, first game in New York, first game back, first game against the Revs.

"I couldn't ask for anything more, really,'' said Smith, who joined Red Bulls from Sounders during pre-season without playing a game for them.

"I'll probably be so pumped up I have to keep myself level headed not be running around like a chicken with my head cut off, and concentrate on what I need to do.''

Concentration and consistency have not always been hallmarks of Smith's game, but Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osario believes he can extract the best from the flying winger.

"Just by mentioning that fact. (Smith) being the player that he is and the qualities that he has, he can be more consistent.

"He is capable of taking people on, getting into the attacking third. He's quick, he's strong.

"Hopefully, we will manage to get the best out of him,'' said Osorio, who added that Smith could be an emergency left-back if Kevin Goldthwaite was unable to play.

Red Bulls suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to MLS new-boys Sounders and Osario has made the team watch the humbling display, both individually and as a team.

"We didn't compete. We were too far away from them in the first 10 minutes,'' Osorio said. "That's a video that we have showed them individually and collectively.

"All the best tackles and all the best challenges were down by Seattle players, not but our players.

"And the second thing is if you look and analyse not only the way they scored their goals and their best chances, they all have something in common.

"We have been working at it and we are going to improve. There are no excuses on the way we had conceded those goals.'' Red Bulls face the Revs at Giants Stadium tomorrow.

n Bermuda's Tyrell Burgess found the net for Vancouver Whitecaps FC who made a winning return to pre-season action on North American soil when they defeated University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 5-2. Substitute Burgess took advantage of a UBC giveaway to slot the ball past Thunderbirds' goalkeeper Elliot Usher.

Two goals from Marlon James helped the Whitecaps to their fourth win in pre-season, while Vicente Arze and Gordon Chin supplied the other goals at UBC's Thunderbird Park earlier this week.

The Whitecaps continue their pre-season schedule of friendly matches on Sunday when they meet Seattle University at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen, before hosting USL Premier Development League side Seattle Wolves FC at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex next Wednesday.

Thordarson's side complete their pre-season with a friendly versus USL-1 rivals Portland Timbers at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex on Friday April 3.
