$1m bail reduction plea denied
A 46-year-old man accused of smuggling heroin into Bermuda saw his application for a reduction in his $1 million bail turned down.Defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher requested that Shannon Forth, of no fixed abode, be granted a new bail if he agreed to be fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet. The Electronic Monitoring Act of 2011 became active last Thursday, with a total of eight getting bail after consenting in Magistrates’ Court to wear the bracelets. The devices allow the court to track the wearer’s location. In all eight cases, the accused were ordered to remain in their residences, except with the leave of a probation officer.Mr Forth was charged on December 9 with importing 483.7 grams of heroin to the Island on December 6, and possessing the drug with intent to supply.Ms Christopher argued at Magistrates’ Court that the $1 million sum meant that her client had been “bailed to jail”, but her application was refused.A preliminary inquiry date was set for February 29, and Mr Forth was remanded in custody.
