Smaller Beachfest to go ahead

A scene from Beachfest 2012.

Beachfest will take place next week, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale.

Organisers have been denied a liquor licence, or the right to charge an entry fee, both of which may impact on which live music acts now perform, at what is normally one of the biggest parties of the Cup Match holiday.

Still, organisers are urging people to come out for the event, and want volunteers to help them before, during, and after, the annual emancipation celebration.

“There’s lots to be done before, after and on the day! Beachfest would not be able to function without the help of volunteers. We would love any help you can offer at any time you are willing to give to us,” an email Chewstick sent yesterday said.

Blaming time constraints for his charity’s inability to get a licence to sell alcohol, or charge an entry fee, Gavin Smith, the founder and executive director of Chewstick, still promised a party that is expected to include; live music, beach football and volleyball, and the Beachfest Crown song competition finals.

“People come as guests and leave as friends — everyone pitches in to have a good time and make it the biggest event of the year,” Mr Smith said.

The charity is still seeking volunteers to prepare the venue ahead of the festivities.

According to the charity’s email “there are a whole variety of jobs that we need filling and are looking to organise some set shifts of people to help us out including fabrication, sports manager and our new campaign, Beachfest GREEN to help tackle the very real environmental impact we have on the pristine and world-renowned Horseshoe Bay Beach”.

“Bring only what you need. Leave nothing but footprints. Let’s keep Horseshoe beautiful.”
