FRIENDSHIP TROPHY

Dev Colts 1 North Village 0 Sekai Waldron's fine flying header knocked holders North Village out of the Friendship Trophy at Somerset Cricket Club last night.

He got on the end of a neat cross from Kieshon Smith after 32 minutes to loop the ball over Nyon Steede in the Village goal.

The Village keeper, who had appeared to be limping earlier in the game, may have been hampered in his jump, but he was immediately replaced by Gladwin Edness who had been warming up on the sidelines.

Village, in fact, should have taken the lead nine minutes earlier when Janeiro Jennings spotted Lionel Cann in space, but Cann shot wide as he ran in on goal.

Village upped the pace at the beginning of the second half but the Colts defence ensured a relatively uneventful evening for goalkeeper Troy Hall. He was called on only once to show the full extent of his ability -- in the 60th minute when he was forced to dive to parry Jamal Smith's left foot shot from the edge of the area after Colts had failed to clear a free- kick.

Indeed it was Colts who had the best chances to add to their lead. First, after 67 minutes, Kieshon Smith brought the good-sized crowd to their feet, when with his back to goal about 40 yards out, he turned his marker, took a couple of lanky strides and unleashed a powerful shot which seemed destined for the top right hand corner. But Edness was equal to it and dived to turn it over the bar.

Then Smith passed to unmarked substitute Harrison Trott, who seemed to have his legs held by Edness as he tried to round the keeper, but neither referee George O'Brien who, it must be said, had refereed in an exemplary manner until that point, nor his linesman spotted the infringement.

Ricardo Nesbitt and Anthony Thomas struck in the first 16 minutes to give them a two goal advantage but James Trott pulled one back after 52 minutes to lift YMSC's hopes.

And Peter Simpson missed a great chance to level the scores with just five minutes left when he fired a penalty awarded for handball high and wide.
