Lee ready to go after long injury lay-off

Roger Lee hopes to make his comeback from injury in Bermuda Hogges’ Premier Development League (PDL) opener against New Jersey Rangers at BAA Field on Friday.Lee has been out of action since last September after sustaining a fractured fibula while scoring his first ever goal for the University of Indianapolis. The 20-year-old has made a full recovery after extensive rehabilitation and is now focused on forging a defensive partnership with John Barry Nusum, who has returned to the Hogges fold.Nusum, a customary striker, made a switch to the back midway through Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying campaign to fill the void left by Lee, who had impressed in the opening two games against Guyana and Trinidad.“I’m a young player and I look towards people like John Barry Nusum who will be in defence with me,” said Lee. “It’s a big advantage for me to be playing alongside someone like John who will give the team a huge boost.“(The World Cup qualifiers) was a good experience for me but unfortunately after the first two games I broke my leg so I missed the rest (of the qualifiers), which was disappointing. I’ve been having rehab twice a day since the injury happened, and I’m one hundred percent ready to go for the first game.”The Somerset Eagles man was one of Hogges‘ most consistent performers last season and believes the team can build on their sixth-place finish and reach the PDL play-offs.“We’re trying to make it to the play-offs but it’s going to take a lot of hard work,” he said. “A lot of the guys have been training hard for a while already whereas I’ve only just come back from injury.“Our main goal is to make progress from last year and that would probably see us make the play-offs.“We’re going to be playing couple of teams at home early on who we should probably be beating. I feel our concentration improved towards the end of last season and if we can just keep our focus then we will be fine.”Hogges start the season with a trio of home games at BAA Field. Up first will be Friday’s match against Rangers, followed by a visit from Brooklyn Knights two days later before facing Jersey Express on May 26.Maurice Lowe’s side then embark on a road trip on June 2 when they will play four matches in seven days, against Westchester Flames, Brooklyn Knights, Long Island Rough Riders and Jersey Express. They finish the season with three games on home soil against Long Island Rough Riders, new franchise Baltimore Bohemians and Westchester Flames.Friday’s game kicks off at 7pm.
