Berkeley girls shine

they captured two out of three overall team titles during yesterday's Secondary School Girls' Cross Country Championships.

The Pembroke school snatched both the Under 13 and Under 15 categories, while neighbours Bermuda High School (BHS) departed holding honours among the Over 15 girls.

Ironically, Berkeley failed to win any individual honours, emphasising team cooperation over personal glory.

Ally Watlington of BHS strode to victory in the Over 15 bracket, racing home over two-and-a-half miles in 21 minutes, 17 seconds, followed by team-mates Johanna Flath (21:21) and Vanessa Madeiros (21:42).

Bank of Butterfield Mile champ Tamika Williams of Warwick Academy turned a similar feat among the Under 15s (two miles), clocking 16:26, trailed by Bermuda Institute's Ayana Smith (16:50 and Vernal Ingham (17:36) of Whitney.

The top three in the youngest group (one mile) included the Saltus duo of Suella Matthews (7:10) and Elisha Miller (7:16) and Heidi Madeiros (7:26) of Warwick Academy.
