Bad week for Britain in Champions League

It wasn’t a good week for British clubs in the Champions League, with only Manchester United picking up a victory, but there is plenty of time for the other sides to get things right in the group phase.United had a scare, too, as they were two goals down inside the first 20 minutes at Old Trafford against Brago of Portugal before two Javier Hernandes headers led United’s fightback to win 3-2.Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City weren’t so fortunate as the Gunners suffered their first home loss in the Champions League in nine years as German side Schalke won 2-0 to go top of Group B, a point ahead of Arsenal.Chelsea, the champions, lost in Ukraine 2-1 to Group E leaders Shakhtar Donetsk while Manchester City, now bottom of Group D with just a single point from three matches, were beaten in Holland by Ajax 3-1 on Wednesday. It is always good to see English clubs do well in the Champions League, but you can’t go on a soccer field and always win. There are going to be obstacles in your way. But the better teams learn to fight the obstacles, pick themselves up for the next game and go and do what they need to do because if you want to be in the Champions League then it is all about winning.Speaking about winning, I see that Arsenal fans expressed their displeasure at the club’s recent lack of success at their annual general meeting on Thursday, a day after the loss to Schalke. They accused the club of putting profits before trophies and it is a difficult balancing act for clubs. It’s difficult because if you are a club who want to be around you have to make smart investments and I think Arsenal have done very well on that side, it’s just that as far as attracting world class players they are falling down a bit.Clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City pay bigger transfer fees and salaries and so it is difficult for Arsenal to keep a player like Robin van Persie who wants to win trophies. They need to be in the Champions League because of the money paid out. And when you are paid that type of money you have to get a return on it. The Champions League is big money.Arsenal, with the finances they have, just need to get that side of things straight. But you have to admire what Arsene Wenger does, he says he doesn’t want to go and invest money in players who he doesn’t consider to be world class.Players have aspirations too, they want to win championships and Arsenal at the present time are not able to do that so the players end up leaving. You have to look at the money side, too, because football can be a short career for some players. They need to make the money in order to look after their future.I feel sorry for the fans at Arsenal as it has been a long time since they have won a trophy but in the long run it could be the best thing that happens because financially they are sound and once those world class players come along they can go and get them.Wenger is no dummy, he studied economics in university. He knows what’s best for the club.
