Reggae Boyz follow lead of nation's sprinters

Some people seem surprised by Jamaica's 2-1 home win over USA but I, for one, saw it coming.Anyone who knows anything about Jamaican football will have not been overly shocked by the result, either.Jamaica have some very good players and in football, on any given day, if you come prepared any team can beat any other.Playing at home, there was no way Jamaica were going to fear USA; they went at them and got the result. It didn't surprise me because I know the Jamaicans can play.Obviously it will be a tougher proposition when they take on the US tomorrow, but it certainly gives the Caribbean region a boost when their teams do well. Not only do Jamaica have good sprinters they have good footballers, too!England certainly couldn't have hoped for a better start to the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign after thrashing Moldova 5-0.Obviously everyone expected England to beat the Moldavians but, credit where credit's due, Roy Hodgson's side went there and got the job done and you can't ask much more than that.I thought it was a good team performance, and despite missing a several first team regulars, the likes Leighton Baines of Everton and Tom Cleverley stepped up and played very well.It will, however, be a far tougher job tomorrow against Ukraine a team England defeated at the European Championships in the summer.I fully expect England to beat Ukraine at home and pick up another win that will put them firmly on track for the next World Cup in Rio.Unsurprisingly, Germany, Spain and France all strolled to victories in their opening group games, although Italy came unstuck against Bulgaria, drawing 2-2.Italy are notoriously slow starters but when it goes down to the wire they always find a way to qualify for the big competitions. They simply have too many good players not to reach Rio 2014.I saw Scotland's 0-0 against Serbia, and I thought they had enough chances to win. The trouble is, if you don't win your home games, it can come back to haunt you. They should have won but it wasn't to be and hopefully they can get something from their home game against Macedonia tomorrow.Scotland certainly can't afford another slip up at home if they are to qualify for their first major competition since 1998. It would be nice to see them in Rio because they have fantastic support.Away from international football, I hear that my former West Ham team-mate Sir Geoff Hurst has backed West Ham's bid to lease the Olympic Stadium in London. From an historical point of view it would be sad to see the Hammers leave Upton Park but financially it does make sense.By moving to the Olympic Stadium we could probably attract another 20,000 supporters and hopefully one day compete with the big teams. It would be sad to see us move, though, because Upton Park has a lot of history and I personally have a lot of fond memories of the place.
