League leaders consolidate positions at the top

League leaders solidified their positions last weekend as Police Polecats and Swifts B squad maintained unbeaten records while Canaries picked up another three points to hold on to the top of the women?s A league.

Police shutout a fighting Rebels side 2-0 in a key match. Playing without their injured captain, Craig Burt, Carl Seale stepped up as leader.

The first half saw both teams creating opportunities but defences marshalled by Richard Adlum and Justin Freisenbruch held firm.

Midway through the half, Police earned a short corner after probing attacks from Nigel Deane and Shannon Lawrence.

A first-time strike from Carl Seale was well blocked but Stuart MacKellar was quick to react giving Police the lead with a rebound past the Rebels defence.

Rebels stepped up the pace in the second half with solid midfield work from Mark ?Beaver? Ray and Kirk Edmunds.

But as the territorial advantage shifted Rebels exposed themselves to counter attacks.

Eventually Chris Clarke drove into the D and wrong footed the keeper leaving Shannon Lawrence with an easy tap in.

Rebels continued pressure but with several chances going begging, Police held on for a deserved victory.

In the other men?s match, Upstarts beat BCS Panthers 2-0.

Women?s play saw Canaries romp to a 5-0 victory over the Swifts in A league.

Canaries were missing their regular keeper but Michelle Ming played kicking back with great success and league leading scorer Lisa DeSilva added another two goals to her season tally in the match.

DeSilva was on the board within ten minutes, scoring from a penalty corner when she stopped the hit out, dribbled around two defenders and smacked a hard shot on goal between the goalie?s legs.

Before the half Rhonda Rawlins and Emma Kelly added two more for the cause.

But Canaries refused to let up pressure in the second half and DeSilva capitalised again before a fifth and final goal from Mary Ellen Jackson.

Despite the scoreline there were strong performances from Swifts ? particularly by 14-year-old Alyssa Cross who was given the task of marking Lisa DeSilva ? but also from Tracy Houghton at sweeper and Mandy Oliver and Jennifer Beech in the midfield.

The youngsters were more successful in the B match, using a lone goal to hang on to their undefeated record.

Despite the win, they played some of their worst hockey this season and initially caused Canaries? defence little trouble.

The winning goal came in the 42nd minute when Amy Smith?s penalty corner was saved only to be slammed into the net from the top of the circle by the fast-improving Paget Holland.

Swifts will have to play better this weekend if they wish to continue with their unbeaten run though.

In other matches, Ravens A suffered a 2-0 A loss at the hands of the Bluebirds.

Ravens? captain Kirsten Butterworth said, despite a great first half, her squad failed to seize key opportunities.

?We had most of the scoring opportunities, but couldn?t capitalise on them,? she said. ?Although we had a few chances in the second half, Bluebirds, with some great work from their front line, were able to take advantage of overall lack of fitness and some disorganisation in the defence to score their two goals.?

The nil-nil half time score reflected her sentiments but revitalised Bluebirds? pushed forward in the second half.

Joanne Wilson put Bluebirds on the scoresheet, dribbling from the 25-yard line into the D and around Ravens? defenders and finishing with a hard shot into the goal.

Ravens tried to equalise but a goal was disallowed and despite terrific work from Ana Anton and Selina DeSilva on the front line, Mandy Pantry and Belthea Pringle on the Blues? backline kept Ravens from penetrating into the D, keeping much of the play in the middle of the field.

Wilson grabbed a second goal to secure the win for Blues.

Ravens claimed a win in the B match, however. Emma MacKnight slotted in the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Bluebirds.

A higher scoring affair was Swallows A side?s 6-0 rout of Orioles.

Hannah Ellison, Shelley Lahti and Jenny Burrell notched two goals each to make clean work of the match.
