Spain still the very best in world football

What a performance by Spain in the Euro 2012 final. Their 4-0 thrashing of Italy showed the world that they are still the team to beat. The Spanish came good at the right time and it was unfortunate for the Italians that they ran into such a well-oiled machine. The Spaniards seemed as if they were sleepwalking through the tournament and then decided to turn it on in the final after they had been constantly criticised by the media and fans for not playing their best football. But they sure silenced everyone with Sunday’s display.I think they came together and said ‘let’s show the world why we are the best and in a league of our own’ and with a snap of the finger the game was over.To the Italians’ credit, they played well to get there and were unlucky that their last substitute got injured with more than 30 minutes to be played. But they were already down 2-0 at that point. It probably wouldn’t have made any difference.Andreas Iniesta was named player of the tournament. He has had a few fantastic seasons for Barcelona and deserved to be recognised for his efforts even though he plays in a star studded team.In my list of best modern day midfielders he is right up near the top. He is creative, is a genius on the ball and gets back and help the team. There are one or two current players who compare with football’s past greats and he is one of them a sensational player. One thing that emerged from the European Championships was the continued debate for goal-line technology, although not everybody is convinced it’s needed. There is so much money in the game that there is a good argument that the technology has to be implemented. But for me personally, I feel the referee should still make the decisions on the field. The players make mistakes and get let off but the moment a goal is disallowed or given and it’s proved to be the wrong call, everyone wants to come down on the man in the middle and that’s harsh on him.FIFA, however, decided this week that it would be used at the next World Cup in 2014 in Brazil. With the tournament finished, the rumour mill is swirling over transfers. It was intriguing to see AC Milan’s Alessandro Nesta leave the big leagues of Europe and head to the MLS where he will play for Montreal Impact. The American league is getting bigger and better and this is a good move in terms of the league getting more exposure so that the younger players can have someone to guide them. The one positive thing the MLS has done is produce young players and given them a chance to shine, and bringing in big money-makers at times can stop these youngsters from developing.Frank Lampard was approached by Los Angeles Galaxy to join their star-studded team and reunite with David Beckham and the likes of Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan and that could be good for him provided it is for the game and not for money.Robin Van Persie is supposedly on his way out of the Emirates Stadium and this would be a huge blow for manager Arsene Wenger.Rumours have him going to Manchester City but they have so many strikers there that some always have to sit on the bench and I highly doubt that Van Persie would accept that, unless he is going just for the money.
