Bascome retains belt despite withdraw
Nikki Bascome will keep his Dynamic Fighting Championship (DFC) junior middleweight belt despite withdrawing from a title defence in Orlando, Florida at the weekend.Bascome’s trainer Allen (Forty) Rego withdrew his orthodox fighter from the three-round championship bout after raising concerns over the weight of his opponent, Tyrone Walker.“Nikki still holds the belt and he can still fight,” DFC CEO Robert Rene told The Royal Gazette. “My next show is January 26 and when someone holds a title for my organisation we expect them to fight.”As well as Walker’s weight, Rego cited a lack of proper sparring for his decision not to allow Bascome to fight. He also took issue with fight promoter Rene for having Bascome defend his title in another weight class.“This guy (Rene) had us in the wrong weight class,” Rego said. “He had us as middleweight and Nikki has never been a middleweight in his life.”Rene said the flyer promoting the fight inaccurately had it down as a middleweight title bout.“The flyer was an error and it should’ve said junior middleweight,” he added. “The belt Nikki got from me is in the junior middleweight so why would I put him a middleweight fight?“It was a typo and we’ve known typos because I’ve had people’s names mis-spelled before.”Rene insisted that Saturday’s fight at the International Palms Resort & Conference Centre could have gone ahead as planned as American Walker made the required weight.“Tyrone weighed in at 151lbs and I told him (Rego) that he would be 154lbs and under,” Rene said. “I told him the kid’s weight and what he’s doing and you still have a problem with that which means you can have a problem with just about everything.“I’m confronted with a situation that I’ve never been in before and I know the next time Nikki is ready to fight I’m going to ask Mr Rego if he can find an opponent for him.”Rene, a veteran martial artists, admitted to being disappointed to see the fight between Bascome and Walker fall through the cracks.“I got a call and the call was to inform me that they (Bascome and Rego) were not coming so I felt really let down because I went through certain expenditures and put somebody (Walker) who has a woman and child who took off from work to train for three weeks so we could help Nikki build his record. But I took it in stride.”Walker fought in Bascome’s absence during the ‘The Rumble on I-Drive 15’, stopping his opponent Cassius Lampskin in the first round.“‘The Rumble on I-Drive 15’ was a very successful show,” Rene said. “It was quite a good show and there was a lot of people there.”Bascome, 21, won the junior middleweight title with a points win against American Kirt Alphonso in Orlando last August to improve his unblemished amateur record to 9-0.
