Concert to celebrate lives of Bermuda’s national heroes

Guiding light: Dame Lois Browne-Evans is one of Bermuda’s eight national heroes

A concert to celebrate the lives of Bermuda’s national heroes will be held at Victoria Park this Saturday.

The concert line-up includes Gene Steede, Joy T Barnum, Willard Burch, Val Sherwood, Working Title, and Wendell Hayward among others.

Bermuda’s national heroes are Sir Edward Richards, Sir Henry Tucker, Dame Lois Browne-Evans, E.F. Gordon, Pauulu Kamarakafego, Sir John W. Swan, Gladys Misick Morrell, and Mary Prince.

National Heroes Day will be officially marked next Monday, June 21, a public holiday.

Ernest Peets, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, said: “We are so pleased to be able to host this upcoming commemorative event to honour Bermuda’s eight national heroes.

“We believe that now more than ever is a time for us to celebrate our national pride, our resilience and those who made such significant contributions to Bermuda.

“This year, the department of culture decided to host a concert as part of our ongoing commitment to assist musicians and other artists who have not been able to perform as a result of the pandemic.

“They will be performing musical tributes, songs that have special meaning to the families of our national heroes.

“Although each of our eight heroes are very different in terms of their spheres of influence, each of their stories tell a part of Bermuda’s story.

“Each of their areas of personal and professional excellence provides us with part of a national origin story that we can mine for strength, wisdom, inspiration and resilience during times of hardship.

“So we see this concert as a way of connecting their extraordinary legacies to our contemporary times.”

The concert starts at 5pm and will have a Covid-safe limited audience of less than 50 people, comprised of family members and some members of the public.

You can register to attend by calling 292-1681. The concert will be live-streamed on the department of culture’s Facebook page, with a recording available on the department’s YouTube channel, Bermuda Culture as well as CITV.
