A wealth of knowledge at your fingertips

If true wealth is knowledge, Ananda Hill is seeking assistance from only the wealthiest of Bermudians.

The Sovereign Revolution is just a few months away from becoming Bermuda’s newest, and perhaps most progressive charitable organisation. It’s mission, abstractly, is to become a living, breathing, Island-wide version of Ptolemy’s Library of Alexandria: a hub of knowledge, of excellence, that will “economically, educationally, and professionally empower Bermudians.”

The idea, said the 25-year-old, is to work as a networking hub for Bermudians who want to learn about skilled professions, and as a place for Bermudians within those skilled professions to share that knowledge. The charity is also aiming to provide seasonal, financial assistance to single Bermudian fathers who have fallen on hard times.

“The main objective of the charity is lending educational and economic assistance to a certain demographic that we feel might benefit,” said Ananda.

“We’re not going have a lot of income and funds to actually target everyone, but the main demographic we want to target — because they don’t have a lot of resources and don’t take part in utilising the resources that are available to them — are single impoverished fathers. There will be a vetting process, and an application process. It will be a seasonal, fractional payment from a pot we’ve set aside through the gains that we’ve made.”

Tournaments, art swaps, date auctions, bonfires, lotteries, bingo and raffles will all hopefully add to the pot, said Ananda, who has just returned to Bermuda this summer after learning how to trade futures contracts in Toronto. But the charity’s remit, he said, goes beyond single fathers. Ananda wants Bermudians to begin working “as a collective toward educational empowerment.”

“Its more of a local culture, self-help vibe. Most issues we face socially and criminally are symptoms of a lack of knowledge, of education, of understanding how to apply yourself. A lot of people only do what they think they are capable of, and a lot of people do what they actually know how to do, based off of whatever resources are act their fingertips. We’ll be a media outlet, a newsletter in the form of a blog, that will give to members the resources they need to, say, sort out insurance claims, open a bank account, file a resume ... Things that will help people educationally empower themselves on a broad spectrum.”

First things first for The Sovereign Revolution will be reaching out to local permaculture specialists and skilled locals and replace useless vegetation with fruit bearing trees: “island-wide, mass permaculture. We’re gonna fruit-bomb Bermuda.”

“People just have a lack of understanding on how to apply themselves. But there’s still that will. Some people might say our generation is a bunch of lazy you-know-whats, but there are people that apply themselves, sometimes not to things that would render actual positive change. You cant wait for people doing well for themselves within the status quo to actually help you circulate wealth within your own people, your own community.”

The charity, set to become officially registered by early 2014, will need members, and Ananda, just like the Library of Alexandria, will need your contribution.

“Every member will list what it is they can do. So say you’re become a member: you’re a journalist, you’re a writer, you know how to do that sort of thing. I know how to do roofing, painting, pet-care, landscaping ... I can fix your kitchen counter, cabinetry, shutters, door frames. If you have a skill, become a member, list your skill set, and get involved.”
