Helping hands needed to clean up golf course

Tidying up: Richard Dickinson mows grass on the ninth hole of St George’s Golf Course.

St George’s MPs are calling on the public to donate their time to help clean up the St George’s Golf Course.

Kenneth Bascome said the handful of people hired by Government as part of a temporary work initiative have been doing a good job but more work still has to be done to improve the condition of the course.

A day has been set aside later this month when volunteers can work together.

“I have said it before but it’s an eyesore,” Mr Bascome said. “Myself and my fellow MP, Nandi Outerbridge, are going to endeavour to clean the area up firstly for the residents who live in the community of St George’s and also for the guests of the St George’s Club who look out over the course.

“We’re putting out an SOS for people to come up and help out. We are also making a request for people to come and donate some food for those who are working and I’m hoping that we will be able to convince some of the landscaping companies to come out with some of their equipment.”

The clean-up is scheduled to take place between 9am and 2pm on January 25.

Mr Bascome also said that he and Mrs Outerbridge are continuing to push their colleagues in the OBA to reopen at least nine holes of the course, noting such a move could provide a major boost for the town.

“The spin-offs and other benefits of having the golf course open are immense,” he said. “The restaurants, the grocery stores and the shops will all see a benefit when golfers come to the golf course.”
