Bermuda Legion reaches out to veterans

A charity devoted to war veterans and their widows is to carry out another round of deliveries of essentials to the now aged and vulnerable group.

The Bermuda Legion, which dropped off food and gifts to clients earlier in the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, said it was working on another distribution of food and household items to isolated and at-risk Bermudian Second World War veterans and their widows. Carol Everson, a welfare case worker with the legion, said the group would also provide reusable cloth face masks sourced in Britain.

Ms Everson added the aim was to provide each veteran or widow with a free mask, and another for a family member or caregiver.

Ms Everson said grocery chain Lindo’s had supported a gift of fresh food and household items last month to veterans and widows, but that not all the legion’s clients had been covered.

Ms Everson added “those unable to shop, or carers unable leave veterans with dementia and other serious health conditions alone at home” should get in touch to register for the second delivery.

Ms Everson, a longtime advocate for Bermuda’s veterans, said that pandemic restrictions meant that the legion’s third dementia caregivers course had been postponed.

She added: “It is expected that many charitable events, including the November Poppy Appeal, will be financially devastated by the ongoing effects of the coronavirus.”

Ms Everson concluded: “Our sister charities throughout the Caribbean are all struggling with this situation, but remain committed to the support and care of our frail, vulnerable and precious veterans.”
