Dominant Onions end their season in style
Champions MR Onions finished their season unbeaten in the league, following a 4-0 victory over BAA in the final game.
It began as a gritty midfield battle and Onions had the best chance to open the scoring when they were awarded a dubious penalty but Steve Woodward clipped the wrong side of the right-hand post.
Though BAA were at times dominating the midfield and playing the better football, shortly after that let off Onions midfielder Billy Shanahan rattled the BAA cross bar from close range. And in the next attack the Onions took the lead when the best move of the game saw leading scorer Eoghan O'Dwyer convert Darragh O'Donoghue's cross with a finely taken half-volley.
The lead was doubled just before as half time as the roles were reversed with O'Donoghue reacting first to score a tap in when O'Dwyer's shot was palmed out.
For all their endeavour and despite the probing efforts of the impressive Adam Shaw, BAA were unable to get many clear sights of the Onions goal and their best opportunity came when Noel McGrath's free-kick was pushed away to safety. The Onions made the game safe when O'Donoghue added his second, and the scoring was completed when Nigel Forrester lashed home an unstoppable volley from ten yards.
North Village were good value for a surprise 3-1 win against second-placed Robin Hood side that looked like they were playing out the season. Tillman Darrell scored twice against his old club while Jamel Smith also scored while a Teddy Terceira header was all Robin Hood could muster.
Dandy Town Roots ended their season on a high by hammering PHC 9-1. PHC started the match with only eight players and Roots showed no mercy. Roots took the lead within a minute when Phillip Lawrence drove a right footed shot past the keeper. Roots continued to siege the PHC's goal and where 2-0 up when Joseph Weeks finished off a good move. Weeks grabbed another before Lloyd Christopher made it four.
PHC pulled a goal back late in the half through Sheridan Ming before Roots' top scorer, Darron Simons made it five just before the break. Roots did not ease up and Weeks grabbed two more, before Shennon Gilbert also got in on the act with a brace.
Prospect/Fire left it to the last day of the season to get a 3-1 win over Lobster Pot while Key West Rangers picked up a walk-over win over Tuff Dogs.
Vasco are the B league division champions after beating Somerset Extros on penalties in the play-off between the B Group One and Group Two winners. The game ended 4-4 after regulation time, with the wind proving to be a formidable opponent for both teams.
Vasco got out of the blocks and took a 3-0 lead in the first half hour, with a goal from Ricardo Arruda and two from Andrew Bento.
Extros slowly got into their groove late in the half and pulled one goal back with a well-taken goal from David Burchall from a corner.
Taking a 3-1 lead into the half seems like a large enough cushion for Vasco but immediately after the restart Somerset Extros began to dominate.
Burchall completed his hat-trick before Troy Govia put Extros in the lead with 15 minutes to play.
Vasco brought on a third striker and took off a defender and it paid off when Ricardo Arruda got the equaliser with less than two minutes to play.
The game then went into penalties with Andrew Griffith getting the crucial spot-kick for Vasco.
n There will be a meeting of all Commercial League teams to discuss the future at BAA clubhouse at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.
