Moment of truth arrives

All attention switches to today's final two Cup Match trial matches at Somerset and St.George's Cricket Clubs, when, for some, the moment of truth will finally arrive.

Way before the first delivery has been tossed down the pitch, all the traditional hype is beginning to mount as to who will get the nod, or on a more sombre note, face the dreaded axe.

For starters, there is already talk of possibly three changes being made to Somerset's team that will venture east to Wellington Oval next Thursday and Friday to defend their crown.

Those now believed to be on the verge of breaking through are young right-arm seamer Jacobi Robinson, who may finally be rewarded for several years of faithful service to his league club, and Western Stars' duo Jermaine Postlethwaite and Saleem Mukuddem.

Postlethwaite has been one of the Island's most consistent batsman with over 400 runs to his credit this season and a batting average of around 30 runs per innings, while Mukuddem has starred prominently in Stars' resurgence of late with both bat and ball.

However, who they replace is anybody's guess.

There are those who have earmarked Curtis Jackson for the dreaded chop, or possibly even Corey Hill. But that is all merely speculation, and certainly it will be the selectors who will have the final say.

Other than that the Somerset selectors should brace themselves for an early evening and begin to intensify their preparations toward the bigger task which is at hand.

On the flip side of the coin, and unlike their western counterparts, it may be very unwise for any of St.George's' selectors to start making plans for a night out on the town as they are faced with a monumental job.

Amid mounting speculation, St.George's are said to be pinning their hopes for success on a team capable of scoring quick runs and then dismissing their opponents twice over the two-day holiday event. And it is here where the selection process could spill way over into the early hours of tomorrow morning.

At present, St.George's have more than their fare share of seam bowlers in which to choose from with the likes of Wilbur Burt, Clarkie Trott, Mackie Crane, Lionel Cann and Hari Rawat at their disposal.

Even more interestingly is the topic of the remaining spots for the spin bowling duties where Peter Philpott, Travis Smith and Eugene (Calabash) Foggo are all vying for a place among the challenger's attack.

In the batting, Flatts' swashbuckler James Celestine seems to have caught the selector's eyes, while even Devonshire's Ricardo Brangman is believed to be in with a realistic shot of making the grade. If he can make the return home in time, then medium seamer Ryan Steede could also be added into the equation.

Both trial matches get underway at 10 a.m.

Turning to tomorrow, Southampton Rangers and St.David's are bracing themselves for what promises to be a cliff hanger at Lords which could very well decide the league championship. Rangers have gone on the bubble in recent weeks and now the moment of truth has arrived. Can they get things back on track and continue their march toward another league championship or will their woes of late continue?

On paper, not much separates these two teams who will both be at full strength.

Elsewhere, Western Stars are heavily favoured over PHC at White Hill Field, while Willow Cuts will be seeking to extend their wining form of late against Cleveland at St.John's Field. In what may turnout to be a prelude to next week's classic, Somerset host St.George's at Somerset Cricket Club.

Looking ahead to First Division action, all roads lead east to Sea Breeze Oval where league leaders Bailey's Bay take on second placed Devonshire.

Bay presently hold onto a slim five-point lead over their guests and if they are to bask in a league championship crown then anything short of a solid win would be ill-advised.

Third placed Flatts will also be seeking to make up lost ground on the leaders when they take on Warwick at Southampton Oval. Police, meanwhile, will be looking for their second successive win over lowly Social Club at Devonshire Rec, while IFP LegTrappers host Somerset Bridge at Police Field.
