Bermuda miss out on podium
Bermuda narrowly missed out on a place on the podium at the Nations Cup Team Racing Championships that was held in conjunction with the International Optimist Dinghy Association South American Championships that concludes in Uruguay today.
Bermuda I, one of two teams that represented the Island in the double elimination event, finished tied for fourth with Chile III.
Comprised of advanced Optimist sailors Tayte Stefaniuk, Joe Arrowsmith, Adam Larson and Mikey Wollman, Bermuda I recorded victories against ISV and USA II before being eliminated in the third round after suffering successive losses to USA I, the eventual winners, and ISV who avenged a first-round loss to Bermuda.
The inexperienced Bermuda II team, including Felix Cutler, George Buckley, Camille Chin-Gurret and Yannick Hillier, bowed out quickly after losing to Chile III and Mexico I.
Fleet racing was scheduled to resume during yesterday’s penultimate day of the championships.
Provisional results showed Tayte leading the local contingent in the yellow fleet in 38th overall with one top five showing under his belt followed by Larson in 45th and Arrowsmith in 50th.
Wollman topped the local sailors in the blue fleet in 21st followed by Cutler, 33rd, and Buckley in 40th.
Hillier, in 36th, is Bermuda’s sole sailor in the red fleet.
Elsewhere, Bermuda is also being represented by Optimist sailors at the Lake Garda Meeting in Italy.
Flying the Island’s banner in Europe are Campbell Patton, Matilda Nicholls, Luke Madeiros, Flo Nicholls and Ethan Madeiros.
Patton, Matilda Nicholls and Luke Madeiros are all competing in the championship fleet while Flo Nicholls and Ethan Madeiros are competing in the under-11 age category.
Official results after four races in the championship fleet showed Matilda Nicholls leading the local field in 36th overall followed by Patton in 55th and Luke Madeiros in 451st.
Flo Nicholls led the local field in the under-11 division in 41st overall followed by Ethan Madeiros in 187th.
The Lake Garda Meeting regatta concludes tomorrow.
