Late Speaker Lowe to be honoured in House

The late Stanley Lowe, former Speaker of the House

MPs will honour the late Speaker of the House Stanley Lowe today as the legislature sits in a virtual session.

Members of Parliament and senators were expected to pay tribute to the former Speaker and veteran Parliamentarian, who was buried on Wednesday.

The House will also debate amendments to Bermuda’s pension legislation to allow emergency withdrawals of up to $12,000 from private pensions.

The withdrawals will be allowed only from individual defined contribution plans — not the Government’s social insurance fund, the public superannuation fund or public official’s pensions.

The amendments are expected to be fast-tracked through both Houses of Parliament after an agreement between the Government and the Opposition was struck.

The House of Assembly will also debate new emergency powers regulations introduced as part of phase one of Government’s four-stage plan to reopen the island.
