Inspirational Ronaldo key to Portugal's success
What an entertaining European Championships it has been so far.Great games, great goals and some great games still to come.I have to say I have been very impressed with Portugal and their inspirational leader Cristiano Ronaldo. When Ronaldo plays well, Portugal play well and his form will be pivotal to whether Portugal are able to go all the way in this tournament.People expect great things from the Real Madrid man and I’m enjoying watching him finally performing on the big stage and produce the goods for his county. When you’re a top player like Ronaldo, criticism will always come your way when you don’t perform but no one can argue with the performances he has delivered so far in the Championships. He has finally realised that the complaining and moodiness can’t be tolerated on the pitch and nowadays lets his feet do the talking, or even his head as he did against the Czech Republic on Thursday. As expected, Germany got the job done against a very disciplined Greece team, making the Germans’ comfortable win all the more impressive and ominous for their rivals.Today’s game between Spain and France should be interesting. I like Laurent Blanc’s side, they play some attractive football, but they will have to remain compact and keep their shape to have any chance of defeating Spain.Spain will always enjoy plenty of possession, which is okay unless you let them get behind you because then you’re in real trouble.I don’t care whether Spain line up with six midfielders or deploy the lone striker, they’re a top, top team and are clever at making adjustments throughout the game depending on the situation. At the moment they’re winning matches so you can’t take anything away from Vicente Del Bosque’s game-plan.The quarter-finals wraps up with England against Italy which should be a very intriguing match, indeed. To be honest, I think both teams will adopt a ‘don’t lose the game mentality’ so it probably won’t be one for the purists. Both teams are defensively sound but they don’t manipulate the ball very well.I’m chuffed to bits for England boss Roy Hodgson, who has proven that he is a quality tactician so far in this tournament. Every big decision he has made, playing Andy Carroll against Sweden, starting Wayne Rooney against the Ukraine and using Theo Walcott as an impact substitute, has paid off.England’s players will be aware that Italy’s class act Mario Balotelli can be a match winner but it all depends on which Balotelli turns up on the day.One things for sure, the Italian coaches will have to keep him under control in order to get the best out of him because he can be a ticking time bomb at times.
