Youngsters take Manhattan by storm
The Bermuda gymnastics team were among the medals at the Manhattan Classic in New York at the weekend.
A team of 19 athletes travelled to the Big Apple, with most competing at the USAIGC copper, bronze and silver levels.
Bermuda’s strongest showing came in the bronze level, with the team capturing second place and Jezhari Talbot winning gold medals on vault, bars and beam, and in the all-around.
The bronze level gymnasts also picked up the Spirit of the Sport Award, given to the team demonstrating the most enthusiasm.
Gold medals were also won by copper level gymnasts Annabelle Miller in the beam and Kayode George in the vault and beam.
Amanda Baughman, one of the Bermuda coaches who travelled with the team, said the squad could be proud of its achievements at the meet.
“The coaches are always impressed by our competitive spirit and sportsmanship, and this meet was no exception,” Baughman said.
“We look forward to the Manhattan Classic as a key part of our schedule, as it gives us a chance to see many of the teams we will compete with at USAIGC World Championships in June.
“Overall, all of the girls showed improvement from the November meet in Bermuda, and Jezhari Talbot in particular had a standout result for the team. For Tabytha in the advanced Level 9 session, she was up against some of the best gymnasts in the US and had an impressive second-place finish on vault. This was a stepping stone for her as she looks to compete in a college programme.”
Bermuda’s senior team will be in action in two weeks at the IGI Chicago Style Invitational. The boys’ squad will continue at the Mid Atlantic Invitational at the University of Maryland on March 1.
