Wells suffers injury blow

Injured: Nahki Wells (left)

Nahki Wells ended 2013 with an another injury when he limped off in the first half of Bradford City’s 1-1 home draw with Swindon yesterday.

The Bermuda striker, who has been linked with a move away from Valley Parade during next month’s transfer window, suffered a hamstring injury in the 28th minute with Bradford leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from Rory McArdle.

Swindon equalised in the second half through on-loan Tottenham midfielder Alex Pritchard.

The 20-year-old collected a ball on the right after 63 minutes, beat five players as he weaved his way through Bradford’s defence and scored with a low, left-foot shot. Wells is a doubt for Wednesday’s away match with Notts County as he recovers from his second injury of the season. He was sidelined for almost the whole month of October with an ankle injury, missing four matches.

Phil Parkinson, the Bradford manager, hailed a much- improved performance from his team who are without a home win in three months.

The result extended Bradford’s run of home games without a win to seven and they have won only once in 14 matches in all competitions.

Three draws and two losses in their last five matches has seen Bradford slip to 10th in the standings. Still, there were some positives from yesterday’s performance, said Parkinson.

“It was a much improved performance,” he said. “The lads have given everything. The spirit in the team is still firmly in place. We were just lacking a bit of quality in and around the box to win a game of football.

“Any team would miss their top scorer and without him we lacked a clinical edge in the final third.”

The good news for Bradford was that Wells’ striking partner James Hanson returned to the team after missing two games through injury, though his return was negated by Wells’ injury.

Parkinson said: “Wells and Hanson are regarded as the best front two in League One. Unfortunately, we can’t get them on the field together at the moment.”
