Corporation may sue Govt

The Corporation of Hamilton is considering legal action against Government in the wake of new legislation giving Parliament and Cabinet oversight of leases.

The powers were awarded to the legislature under the Municipalities Amendment Act 2013, which sent the first of several leases before the House of Assembly this week.

According to lawyer Eugene Johnston, who is also representing the Corporation in its case against Bermuda Ombudsman Arlene Brock, Government has been sent a letter before action.

The Corporation is said to be seeking to challenge the constitutionality of the amendments.

A spokeswoman said the letter was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday, in connection with “a raft of measures found in the Act”.
