Government offers no comment to reports that $2m has been stolen
Authorities are refusing to comment on reports that as much as $2 million has been stolen from the offices of the Accountant General.
The Royal Gazette first received information about the purported theft last month. Unofficial sources claimed that around $2 million was stolen and that the suspect had since fled the Island.
Police have subsequently confirmed that detectives have launched a probe into “financial irregularities” at the department, but refused to provide any details.
“The Bermuda Police Service can confirm an investigation has commenced into financial irregularities reported by the Accountant General’s department,” a spokesman said, adding: “Nothing further will be mentioned on this matter at this juncture.”
This newspaper did ask for further information about the alleged crime, including confirmation of how much money was stolen, who the suspect is, if it was known if the suspect was still on the Island, and if Bermuda police are now liaising with international enforcement agencies to track down the suspect.
The spokesman said authorities were not willing to provide answers to those questions.
And Acting Accountant General Roseanne Foy is also refusing to speak publicly on the reported incident. Yesterday, a spokesman said the department would not be issuing a statement on the matter.
