Keeper Dill named Player of the Week
Bermudian goalkeeper Stefan Dill put a major feather in his cap earlier this week.The Lenoir-Rhyne University senior was named South Atlantic Conference Men’s Player of the Week after helping his college to recent shutout wins over North Georgia (2-0) and highly ranked Wingate (1-0).It is the first time the Bermuda International ‘keeper has had the honour bestowed upon him.“It feels good and I feel like a superstar,” Dill told The Royal Gazette.The Bermuda Athletic Association (BAA) goalie has kept clean sheets in three matches so far this season and leads the league in goals-against average (0.64) and save percentage (. 833).Dill, 21, appears to be reaping reward for a hard work ethic and a burning desire to succeed.“I told myself that this year is going to be different and I have been working hard all summer to achieve it,” added Dill, who suited up for Bermuda against the visiting England ‘C’ squad during the summer. “I’m striving for All American status this season.”Lenoir-Rhyne University’s 1-0 upset over fifth ranked Wingate earlier this week was their first win on the road against the Bulldogs in seven years. It was also the Bears’ first shutout win over Wingate in seven years.The visitors prevailed on a second -half strike from forward Gabriel Jones in the their South Atlantic Conference opener at Wingate Soccer Complex.Dill was equal to the task at the other end of the pitch, executing three saves between the posts to protect his team’s slim advantage.“That was a big upset because we were the underdogs,” he said.Dill and his teammates are presently ranked eighth in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Southeast Region Poll.The Bears, who are currently on a four-game win streak, will host Coker in a South Atlantic Conference in their next outing at the Moretz Sports — Athletic Complex where they will play seven of their next eight matches.
