UK plans changes to GCSE exams
Sweeping changes are planned for the UK’s GCSEs examinations — but any alterations to Bermuda’s exams will follow the lead of the Cambridge International Curriculum, according to Government.Following reports that UK Education Secretary Michael Gove plans an extensive revamp of the GCSEs for the coming year, a Ministry of Education spokeswoman said the local authorities were keeping in regular contact with the Cambridge examination providing body.“We have been briefed on the developments in the United Kingdom,” she added.“However, it is important to note that Bermuda does not follow the UK GCSE curriculum; we are part of over 160 countries that follow the Cambridge International Curriculum.”Asked if the UK changes might have ramifications for Bermuda, the spokeswoman said Bermuda’s education authorities were “confident any changes that impact on the Cambridge International will be communicated in a manner that allows us time to determine our response.“The Commissioner and senior officials will remain in contact with Cambridge International, and will be provided with a full update on any decisions.”The Cambridge International Curriculum, introduced to Bermuda’s schools in 2010, is now used across the Island’s public education system.
