Smith third in Austria
Long jumper Tyrone Smith claimed bronze at the Gugl Games Athletics meet in Linz, Austria over the weekend. His leap of 7.76 metres was good enough to get him on the podium just ahead of USA’s George Kitchens (7.75m).Alexander Menkov from Russia topped the charts with a top leap of 7.94 metres while Great Britain’s Chris Tomlinson grabbed the runners-up spot with a leap of 7.79 metres.Smith also had an encouraging performance in his first IAAF’s DN Galan Diamond League meet in the Stockholm Stadium in Sweden. The meet was his first this year in the Diamond League and he didn’t disappoint as finished fourth, above many who competed in the previous week’s World Championships in Russia.“My First Diamond League of the year and I finished fourth, not bad given I jumped 7.94m and led for a while,” he said.“It was only 57° as well, so I’m OK with the result.”That event was also won by Menkov (8.18m) while Godfrey Mokoena from South Africa finished second (8.04m) and Eusebio Caceres of Spain third (8.0m).Next up for the Bermudian is the ISTAF Berlin meet in Germany, one of his favourite stops on the world stage, later this week.
