Govt to test hurricane alert text system

A new hurricane alert text message system is having its first test run today. The Ministry of Public Safety announced the practice messages will be received by Digicel and CellOne customers at 12.30pm.The test will be conducted in preparation of weather alerts in the event of hurricanes or storms. The messages will include updates on storms and notify customers on school and camp closures, public transport cancellations and the closure of the Causeway.Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley said a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the providers to send customers free updates about storms affecting the Island.“It is important that we test the system in advance of any real situation,” he said.“We want people to be confident in the information we can provide from the EMO and also to be assured of the speed at which it can be delivered. I wish to again thank Digicel and CellOne for partnering with us in this public service.”
