Burgess questions cost of health insurance
Opposition MP Derrick Burgess has questioned Government about the high cost of health insurance, particularly for seniors.Mr Burgess, the Shadow Minister of Public Works, said in the House of Assembly that while Government covers a significant percentage of hospital treatment, seniors still face extremely high insurance rates.“Seniors pay quite heavily, quite dear, for health insurance,” Mr Burgess said. “The question is why, because at the age of 65, up until 74, if they go to the hospital the cost is taken care of up to 80 percent, and at 75 [years old], 90 percent.“I would think, based on common sense, that the premium for seniors would be much less, but if you go to any insurance company any day of the week and ask what it would cost for health coverage, they are going to quote you at least $1,200 for the most basic care.“I would think it would be less. Why are seniors charged so much when most of their hospital care costs are covered by the Government? I really don’t understand it. It should be much less.”Mr Burgess also expressed concern about coming increases in hospital costs and health insurance costs, and the impact it will have on the public, saying one Government employee told him the cost of their comprehensive dental plan would be increasing by 63 percent.“At a time when we are asking Government employees to entertain a pay cut and people losing jobs, I think it’s a bit unfair,” he said.
