Premier league still best in the world
For those who might be sceptical over the Barclays Premier League’s status as the best league in the world, they only had to look at the past week to see that it deserves that label. There was excitement in every game. All of the big clubs lost and there were twists and turns in every match.No-one would have seen Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all lose within three days of each other.Gamblers would have put their week’s paypacket on United beating bottom-placed Blackburn, but crazy things happen in football as we saw Rovers snatch a 3-2 vicory.Going to Old Trafford is no easy task but to have a two-goal lead and then grab a winner towards the end was a wonderful achievment for United’s Lancashire neighbours. We have to remember that Rovers have a good youth set-up. You only have to look at last year and their triumph at Old Trafford in the Youth FA Cup and a lot of those kids played in the game on Saturday. You have to tip your hat to them.City travelled to Sunderland and gave up a late winner and you couldn’t blame them for thinking the whistle was about to blow and a 0-0 draw would be the outcome. But you have to play to that final whistle and they didn’t.You just have to close up shop knowing you are going to have to settle for the one point and not chase three. They were inbetween minds and came out with nothing.Even if the coach urges you forward to get the goal you need to win, you need a few players on the pitch who are smart enough to say, ‘hey we have enough, let’s move on with that’.As for Sunderland, you have to give credit to manager Martin O’Neill because he has come in there and got the job done so far.Aston Villa’s win over Chelsea was another result that no-one seemed to see coming but Villa could have won by more than what they did.Chelsea are a very funny team this year and these losses seem to happen when they rotate their side. It weighs on the players because if a player is in form, you can’t just take him out of the side.Right now when you look at the likes of Frank Lampard, he is a perfect example of this, in one week, out the next. He’s at an age when he will have to look at himself and ask whether he wants to stay.Fulham also got a good result against Arsenal at home after being a goal down. Lots of times games are so frantic that you hope someone on the bench can come on and help you. When a team’s winning, I would say bring off the striker and get things nice and tight, but as for Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson, you can’t question their decision making. When they make mistakes they own up to them and as a player you also have to put your hand up and say ‘it’s my fault’. Arsenal gave up two goals late on, although their side is young. You don’t get more points for scoring more goals, so take the goal that is winning and move on.The league table remains what I expected. City are still the team to beat, they have a deep squad and players that can do fantastic things.Liverpool seem to be going in the opposite direction without Luis Suarez. They looked out of place against City and it will be interesting to see how they cope in the next few games without Suarez.I don’t see them qualifying for the Champions League or the Europa League at the moment. Suarez is capable of scoring 20-25 goals this season and they are missing him.* * * *Congratulations to Nahki Wells for getting into the Bradford City side and scoring goals as he is doing. But it’s more about repaying yourself for the hard work you are putting in rather than repaying the coach. He sees what you are doing and if you work hard he will give you a chance. As a striker you have one job and one job only, and that ‘s to score goals. If you score, you stay in the side, if you don’t you will be looking over your shoulder in future matches.* * * *Finally, my condolences go out to the Dickinson family, the Robinson family and the Tucker family who have all lost members of their family this week. They were valuable people in the community.
