Playing for pride
Although the games against Barbados are meaningless as far as advancing in the World Cup, the team should look to make the most of them, especially given the the fact they are on home soil and victories could put us higher up the FIFA rankings.Defeat yesterday would all but destroy those hopesThese games are more about pride than anything else, but every player should want to win regardless.I’ve said this before, and it is important that the boys are aware of this, the more international games you play, the better you will become. If you play regularly and against good opposition you will get invitations to play against better teams because you are proving yourselves. This produces better teams and better players for the country.* * *Looking at the European Championship play-offs, there are some teams that can only blame themselves for their shortcomings.Look at Portugal. Why haven’t they quailfied already? They have a superb team that can beat anyone. What went wrong? There seems to be discontent in their camp with players not want to play for the current coach.Their association need to sort this out quickly and get the national team back on track. When Turkey play Croatia, they must not allow their opponents a sniff of victory. As it is two legs, it’s very important to get off on the right foot.It would be nice to see Ireland advance taking into account how they can play.I hope they can get through as it will be bring something different to the competition. Their fans are great, cheering to their love for the country.England coach Fabio Capello is still backing John Terry and that’s the right thing to do as you are innocent until proven guilty and that’s the premise he is going on.I can’t say what he did or didn’t do, I’m just tired of players saying that they didn’t do it and it ruins the game and it’s time that the governing bodies put a stop to this. It is wrong and senseless. It seems as though we are going back to the old days of football, so things need to be sorted out and erased from games altogether.* * *I have to send my condolences to Joe Frazier’s family. He was a great boxer and you can’t be a world champion without his kind of courage and class. He beat Muhammad Ali and that in itself is an achievement. It was sad to hear that he had died. He was still young and could have given something back to the sport. Those sort of things happen in life and you just want to wish his family the best and go on from there.
