Hogges striker Russell hungry for goals
Hot-shot striker Antwan Russell believes he can fire Bermuda Hogges to the Premier Development League play-offs and finish as the division’s top goalscorer this season.Russell is brimming with confidence after a successful brief stint at Ilkeston FC where he scored three goals, helping the English non-league side to the Derbyshire Senior Cup.The 26-year-old has since turned his attentions to a busy summer of football on home soil, firstly with Hogges and then the Bermuda national team who are for gunning for gold at the NatWest Island Games.Hogges kick off their season against Mid Atlantic Division leaders Reading United, who have won their opening two games, at Goose Gosling Field next Friday at 8pm.“I can’t wait until May 31st when the first Hogges game kicks off, and then we have the England ‘C’ game and Island Games to look forward to,” said the Robin Hood man.“By the looks of it everyone is relishing the opportunity to pull on the country’s colours and play in a tournament on home soil.”Hogges should have plenty of striking options this summer with the likes of Domico Coddington, Angelo Simmons and Jahron Dickinson expected to be named in Andrew Bascome’s squad. And Russell sees no reason why he can’t become the division’s most lethal marksman.“I’m looking to be the leading goalscorer in the league. I’m looking to get right up there because strikers don’t think they’re doing a good job unless they’re scoring,” Russell said.“If I’m not scoring I don’t think I’m doing my job, so I’m looking to score.”Russell, who previously had trials at MLS side Toronto FC, admits Hogges have largely underperformed since the team’s formation in 2006 but is confident the current squad can break that pattern.“We’ve not done ourselves proud in recent seasons . . . this year we don’t want to finish in the top half, we want to finish in the play-offs,” he said.“There’s quite a few good players in the squad this season so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t do well.”Last summer saw Russell bestowed with the captain’s armband by former coach Maurice Lowe. It’s a responsibility the pacey striker would welcome again this campaign.“Last year we had a different coach and I was the skipper (Maurice Lowe) showed some faith in me and I think I did him proud,” said Russell.“If the coaches want me to be skipper again this year then I’m up for it.”
