Plenty to keep you distracted as nights draw in
Hi folks,We’re lucky enough to still have blue skies for the most part so far this month. It is getting very close to that in-between time of year that makes it really difficult to choose what to wear in the morning. I’m already painfully slow at that time of day, so anything that requires brain power before I’ve had my first taste of caffeine can be quite disastrous. Good thing that there are lots of Bermuda events coming up to distract me:* Dolphin Quest and the National Museum of Bermuda are to present a High Flying Dolphin Fundraiser Show on Sunday from noon until 4pm. Sign up for dolphin photos and feedings at 1pm; the show starts at 2pm. Paralympian Jessica Lewis will be available for photos between noon and 2pm. The cost of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, with additional charges for photos and feeds. All proceeds will benefit WindReach Bermuda’s Adaptive Sports Programme. For more information telephone 234-4464.* The Association of Canadians is holding Bermuda’s First Terry Fox Run on Sunday, October 21. Terry Fox embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research in 1980, after having lost a leg to cancer. He ran halfway across the country before he was forced to quit due to his illness. After he died in 1981, Canadians around the world held annual runs to raise money for cancer research. Registration is from 7am, with the run starting at Shelly Bay Park at 9am. To register or donate visit www.canadians.bm.* As you’ll all be aware, Bermuda has always sourced the majority of its fresh water supply from rainfall. Have you given any thought to how sustainable this might be with the increase in population and per-unit use? Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) present Bermuda’s Water Ways: Documentary Film and Panel Discussion on Tuesday, October 23 at BUEI from 7.30pm until 9pm. A screening of ‘Trusting Rain’, a documentary film by Kristin Alexander, will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Carol Dixon. Tickets, $20, are available from The Music Box, on 295-4839, or from the BEST office 292-3782 or office@best.org.bm.* La Serena Spa at the Reefs is hosting stretching and pain relief workshops with sports and remedial massage therapist Greg Ozarowski on Tuesday, October 30 and Tuesday, November 6. The events will run from 7pm until 8pm. The first workshop will teach how to stretch your entire body in 15 minutes (bring a yoga mat). The second will cover emergency self-massage for pain relief of the upper and lower body (bring a yoga mat, tennis ball and golf ball). The cost is $120 for both workshops and all attendees will receive a 15 percent discount on their next treatment with Greg. To register, telephone 239-0184 or e-mail, laserenaspa@thereefs.bm.* The Bermuda Karate Institute will hold the 25th Annual Skippy Kick, an open martial arts tournament on Sunday, November 4 starting at 1pm at Pembroke Sunday School. The event will feature forms, weapon forms, point sparring, full contact and 2011 winners Kent Bean and Jasmyn Renfroe. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for under-12s.
