Estwanik meets two Island Games qualifying standards
Chris Estwanik achieved two NatWest Island Games qualifying standard times in a matter of minutes at the National Sports Centre running track on Wednesday night.He ran a solo 1,500m, clocking a time of four minutes and five seconds which was easily inside the 4.12 men’s standard for this year’s Games. The NatWest Island Games are being held in Bermuda from July 15 to July 19.After the briefest of recoveries Estwanik was back in action in a six-person 5,000m time trial. The men’s qualifying standard was 16.43, while women had to beat 20.00.Estwanik was first to finish in 15.32, followed by Stephen Allen in 16.17 and Ryan Wilson in 16.37. The three women who ran were led across the finish line by Ashley Estwanik in 18.09, followed by Rose-Anne Hoey in 18.42 and Victoria Fiddick in 20.05.A final time trial opportunity for runners hoping to meet the 10,000m qualifying standard for the Games will take place tomorrow at the national track at 5pm. All track and road runners are welcome, although the event is aimed at those likely to run within one minute of the qualifying time, which for men is 34.50 and for women is 42.25.On Saturday, May 18, there is another opportunity to meet the team selection standards during World Athletics Day with a 1,500m event scheduled for 4pm and a 5,000m at 4.45pm. The 1,500m standard for women is 4.54.There is no charge to compete in the trials.
