Melbourne CC 127-9Bermuda 132-4Bermuda won their one-day ‘series’ against the touring Melbourne Cricket Club from Jamaica, after veteran Janeiro Tucker stroked 44 not out to lead them to a comfortable seven-wicket win in a rain-shortened match at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.Light showers kept the covers on the pitch and kept the players waiting for more than four hours before the match, which finally started at 3pm, was reduced to 28 overs a side. It proved to be a good toss for Bermuda’s stand-in captain Rodney Trott to win as Melbourne lost three early wickets after being asked to bat first.Malachi Jones got the breakthrough in the seventh over when he trapped Tarique White lbw for seven, with just 18 on the board. Two more wickets on 26 when first and second change Treadwell Gibbons and Janeiro Tucker struck early in their spells. Tucker removed the other opener Jon-Ross Campbell for 16 and the next over Gibbons found the edge of Sadiki Bolt’s bat to give wicketkeeper Chris Douglas — playing in the absence of Jekon Edness and Jason Anderson — the catch behind.Gibbons picked up another wicket soon after when he removed Sadique Henry to make it 37-4 in the 14th over. However, the Jamaicans, missing captain Andre McCarthy who returned home for national team duty, were given some hope when middle order pair Tafari Williams and Duwayne Thompson added 60 for the fifth wicket.Thompson, who started to take the attack to the bowlers, stroked two sixes and two fours in his top knock of 35 while Williams contributed 25 before he was deceived and bowled by a slower ball from Malachi Jones which ended the most productive stand of the innings.Melbourne lost wickets regularly again after that as they stumped from 97-5 to 117-9 as Bermuda’s bowlers kept on the pressure late in the innings. Greg Maybury led the bowling with three for 29 from six overs while Tucker and Gibbons supported with two for 19 and two for 27 respectively. Jones had a good spell, giving up just 18 runs in his six overs for one wicket.Bermuda took an early wicket in their chase when Gibbons steered a shot straight to Campbell at gully when the score was 14. Dion Stovell and Chris Douglas carried the score to 58 when Douglas lost his patience and had his stumps knocked back by Shamal Anderson after scoring 21.Southampton Rangers teammates Stovell and Janeiro Tucker then carried the team towards victory with a stand of 55 for the third wicket before the former was caught by a brilliant one-handed catch above his head by Campbell at dee mid-off. Stovell, dropped on 19, scored 36 from three fours. Melbourne took another wicket before Bermuda reached their target with five overs to spare when captain Trott was smartly stumped down the legside by ‘keeper Garfield Moore, leaving Tucker to wrap up the victory with Malachi Jones.Tucker’s 44 came from three fours and two sixes as spinner Shamal Anderson claimed two for 18 from five overs.“I thought it was a good all-round performance from the boys and I think it was also good that despite the weather that we still had a focus on the game,” said Trott who chosen not to bowl himself.“I was just giving other guys the opportunity to bowl, I was just trying to shuffle the bowlers around so that the batsmen didn’t get used to the bowlers. I thought the guys coped with that well, coming on for two overs. Overall I thought it was a good performance from the team.“I just told the guys to go out and bat the 28 overs and win comfortably. It was only something like four runs an over and the guys ran between the wickets good. In the last couple of overs we had wickets in hand and decided to push it and end the game before the rain came. As you can see we are moving forward and I just hope it carries on at the end of the month.”
