‘She’s obviously a very smart kid’
Aspiring legal eagle Antoinae Samuels-Saltus, 13, has an inside eye on the justice system after getting to shadow lawyer Richard Horseman for a day.Antoinae put herself forward to tag along with Mr Horseman and get an understanding of how the law works.Asked what attracted her to the legal industry, she told The Royal Gazette: “I have an interest in arguing to make a point. I like that part about it, especially where in some cases you get to help people out.”An M3 student at Sandys Secondary Middle School, the Southampton teen is keen on “maths, English, social studies and business studies”.The school sends teams of students out each year to different work environments.“Last year our group came to Wakefield Quinn for careers day. I liked it here and I asked my teacher if I could come back,” she explained.Antoinae began at Magistrates’ Court to watch a short-form preliminary hearing, before heading over to the Supreme Court.“That was a trial involving a machete where they were looking at the evidence. They were going through pictures of different people, looking through each one to see if they had picked out the right guy.”There were no points to be debated at this early stage, just procedure to watch and notes to take. But she made sure to look the part, with a suit and tie.“I hope I can go further with it,” Antoinae said.Accustomed to considerably older pupils, Mr Horseman called her “very attentive and understanding of a lot of what was going on”“She’s obviously a very smart kid,” he said.“We help out Sandys Middle School with their career day because it’s a great opportunity to expose their students once a year to the legal industry.“It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community — and spend a day with the kids.”
