Tucker inspires Bermuda to victory

Janeiro Tucker scored 65 not out for Bermuda

Suriname 138-8 (20 overs)Bermuda 142-4 (18.4 overs)Veteran batsman Janeiro Tucker blasted 65 not out from six sixes and four fours off just 30 balls as Bermuda beat Suriname by six wickets in the ICC Americas T20 qualifiers at the Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.Tucker, who celebrated his 38th birthday last Friday, paced the team to their second straight victory with eight balls remaining as he followed up his knock of 30 the day before against Bahamas who Bermuda thrashed by 127 runs. The former Bermuda captain got support from captain Stephen Outerbridge (29) and former skipper David Hemp (22) after opener Dion Stovell went early for just nine. Lionel Cann, batting at number five, was trapped second ball for a duck when the score was 91, leaving Tucker to complete the victory as Rodney Trott played a supporting role with eight not out as Tucker dominated the unbroken fifth wicket stand of 51.Interim national coach Arnold Manders, who selected an unchanged team, was pleased with the team’s performance ahead of today’s two matches against Cayman Islands and United States.“Janeiro did a good job of pacing the innings and targeted the right bowlers,” said Manders. “We may have fallen behind the run rate slightly but he just waited for the bowler to target and just finished it off with an over and a half to spare.”The return to the team of Outerbridge, Hemp and Cann, who all missed the recent Barbados tour, is giving the top of the batting order a solid look to it and Manders had no concerns about the top five or six getting the job done. “We had too many wickets in hand, as long as Janeiro stayed there, but the other guys could have finished it off, too.” said the coach who still had Malachi Jones, Tre Manders, Jacobi Robinson and Jekon Edness further down the order.“We needed 20-something off 18 balls and that wasn’t hard to do with the wicket playing good and a set batsmen in. But Surinam bowled extremely well and fielded pretty good and took a brilliant catch off Hemp. It was a good game and a challenge for them but they came through all right.”Troy Dudrath, who took the new ball, was Suriname’s top bowler with two for 27 from three overs while Arun Gakoel had one for 16 from four overs. .Surinam won the toss and elected to bat on a wet outfield as the Bermuda slow bowlers struggled to grip the ball. Spinner Rodney Trott was the pick of the Bermuda bowlers with three for 17 while Jones claimed one for 17 and Tucker one for 26. There were three run outs in the Suriname innings as they slumped from 123-3 to 138-8 when their overs ran out. Number three and four batsmen Shazam Ramjohn (42 off 25 balls) and Sauid Drepaul (35 from 25) were their top batsmen after Mohindra Boodram (17) and Troy Dudnath (14) put on 28 for the first wicket.Bermuda biggest test so far will come later today when they play the United States, but Manders insists they cannot afford to look further than the first match against Cayman. “Our batting is deep and in Barbados we didn’t have Lionel, Hemp, Stephen and Malachi, but now adding those four to the team the batting is deep with Jekon coming in at ten and Maybury at 11,” said Manders.“We haven’t used Jacobi yet as a pinch-hitter so we have a lot of options. The top four or five are doing the job right now. Tre was supposed to bat at six but we changed and sent in Rodney. With Twenty20 it is always changing and we want the experienced batsmen to have most of the 20 overs.“The team is quite happy in the space we’re in right now and we just need to improve every game. Tomorrow should be harder with Cayman and the United States. Suriname could be a surprise team. We’re taking one match at a time and tomorrow I’m not even thinking about the United States, our first game is Cayman.”Bermuda are down to 13 fit players with Jason Anderson feeling unwell. The Islanders take on Cayman at 11am (Bermuda time) tomorrow.
