The public have been disrespected
March 15, 2013Dear Sir,Your offices should be inundated with e-mails and letters concerning the headline of The Royal Gazette on March 15 ‘Disrespect from Government halts ferry service’. This coming from the Bermuda Industrial Union, are they kidding me/us? How in the world does the union keep a straight face as to the use of the word disrespect? This union has obliterated much of the good and stellar work it has done for labour over several decades. They have bullied and inconvenienced the public for years, we have been disrespected for years with wildcat strikes, ignoring the grievance procedure and calling work stoppages at will. They are never wrong and use every weapon in their arsenal, work to rule etc. There is always a way around a 21-day notice of strike action.Meetings are poorly attended when members as asked to come during their off time. Go figure. I am a disgusted paid up member and do accept the relevance and the right of the worker to be organised and have fair representation. Labour must be treated fairly with good competent and responsible leadership. I am also a citizen who uses public services and purchases goods who has been annoyed by the selfish and aggressive demands often placed on us by a powerful union that often appears to be a law unto itself. It is rich in the extreme for the BIU to opine disrespect considering their record in this regard over many years. Buses halted in the middle of the day, ferries stopped, trash uncollected and the public must simply bear with this and be understanding. Well I’m sure this BIU member speaks for many when I say, I’m sick of being disrespected by routine depriving of services that I have to pay for. I am John Q Public, and once and for all I demand that the unions extend the same respect and consideration for us that they demand. We cannot strike against you! What a pity!DISRESPECTED/ DISGUSTED
