We need MRI choices

February 22, 2013Dear Sir,In one of your recent editorials, you raised the question as to whether Bermuda needed more than one MRI provider.About a year ago, I was sent by my doctor to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for an MRI of my shoulder. Because I am obese and claustrophobic I could not have the exam done at the hospital. I was preparing to go abroad for my MRI when a friend (not my doctor) told me that Bermuda Healthcare Services had an MRI unit that was open and catered to claustrophobic patients like me.I went to BHCS, had the study done and took the report (from Lahey Clinic) back to my doctor. He was able to perform surgery on my shoulder and I am back to playing tennis. I was shocked when I found out that my insurance company paid BHCS 80 percent of what they would have paid KEMH…..and that saved me a tidy sum.My point here is that we must be careful not to limit our choices as we work to cut the cost of healthcare on our island.PRO-CHOICE
