Unbecoming

February 19, 2013Dear Sir,December 17 2012 — a date in infamy and profound disappointment or a watershed moment of absolute delight and satisfactory relief depending on who you voted for. It is, however, amazing the unofficial declaration of the One Bermuda Alliance’s honeymoon period being over before their first Parliamentary session! The source of this unilateral oration? A letter writer to your erstwhile column! The writer could be forgiven for the anxiety of having to wait for any period of time to repudiate the party he or she did not vote for. For those who want to criticise the new administration, take heart, the opportunities will be endless over a five-year period. That is how it should be! Keep the fielding tight and the bowling aggressive and attacking play on a field set for victory. The truth is this — there is abundant reason for hope and optimism and a real desire for some to see them fail, that is how it is, if are prepared to be honest. The election clearly demonstrates that sports enjoy no monopoly on “the thrill of victory” and the agony of defeat. It is incredibly regrettable to hear base name calling to express angst and frustration by any member of our legislature. It is childish, unacceptable and simply wrong. If your position is compelling and demands notice and attention because of its merit it will receive consideration in the honourable House, then you can make your case like an competent member and not a common brawler in a saloon! We expect and demand language and carriage worthy of our legislators both in and out of the House. Mr acting Editor we do not conscript people off the street to conduct our affairs and enact policy, they offer themselves and solicit our votes. With that in mind they should show better example and not reduce the debate to insults and name calling when you are unable to win the day on depth of your conviction and argument.Calling the One Bermuda Alliance government “demons” is outrageous and unbecoming of the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition. We choose to believe he is better than that and has much better arrows in his quiver. The OBA will, I’m sure achieve a better than passing grade in government and satisfy the majority of the electorate. That is all they have to do period. If they do not we need no reminders of the very energised detractors of their fate if they fail in this endeavour. It is my hope that they will resist the temptation to respond to vile low brow name calling and address the real issues of recovery and legislative competence to get us out of the fine mess the last administration left us in. OBA for better government and hope we can believe in — now just do it we are depending on you. Congratulations to the OBA for refusing to let the Progressive Labour Party define them. Humbug ... errr ... that should be hooray.WAYNE B SCOTT
