Groups urge Premier to amend Human Rights Act

Six campaign groups have written to Premier Craig Cannonier urging him to amend the Human Right Act to protect all Bermuda’s citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation. The groups — the Centre for Justice, Amnesty International Bermuda, the Human Rights Commission, Rainbow Alliance, Vision Ministry and Two Words and a Comma — also sent the Premier a petition containing hundreds of signatures from Island residents who wish to see the law changed.Their open letter was accompanied by a draft copy of a bill which would bring about the necessary law reform. The news comes in the same week that there was an overwhelming vote in the British Parliament in support of legalising gay marriage.Protection against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is already covered there by the Equality Act, passed in 2010.Since the One Bermuda Alliance came to power, Minister of Community and Cultural Development Wayne Scott has said: “The Government is against discrimination in any form.“We will strengthen Bermuda’s commitment to human rights for all, prohibiting discrimination in employment, goods and services and housing.”Some further reference by Government to the issue is expected in today’s Throne Speech.l The letter to the Premier can be read in full at www.justice.bm.
