Bailey qualifies for Carifta Games

Antonio Bailey became the third Bermudian athlete to qualify for this year's Carifta Games yesterday.Competing in Bermuda National Athletics Association's (BNAA) Track and Field Meet at the National Sports Centre (NSC), Bailey achieved the Games' 'B' standard in the Under 17 boys 400 meters after covering the distance in 51.46.The son of former Somerset Trojans footballer Anthony Bailey was a member of the Island's Carifta team that competed in last year's junior regional event hosted by Bermuda.He is the third local athlete to qualify for the upcoming Games behind Tiara DeRosa and Kerri Furbert.DeRosa was the first to qualify on January 5 after reaching the Games' 'A' standard in the Under 17 girls shot put with a hurl of 10.33 meters which surpassed the 'A' standard qualifying mark of 10.25 meters.Long jumper Furbert qualified two weeks later while competing at the Missouri Invitational at the Hearnes Centre, Columbia. The University of Missouri student achieved the Games' 'A' standard after posting a personal best leap of 5.76 metres to finish third in the indoor meet.Furbert represented Bermuda at the last Carifta Games, placing fifth in the Under-20 girls' long jump final.This year's Games will be held at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas from March 28 to April 1.BNAA's Track and Field Meet continues today at the NSC, beginning at 1pm.
