Citing “personal reasons”, St George’s businessman Alfonso Harris has dropped out of the mayoral race for the Old Town, leaving Deputy Mayor Garth Rothwell unopposed in the election for the head of the Corporation of St George’s.“Garth is a good guy who will do a great job,” Mr Harris, a former Common Councillor, told The Royal Gazette. “It’s about St George’s — we have been neglected for too long and Garth has been on the right track. The idea is to get attention back on the Old Town, and we can’t waste time.”Mr Rothwell’s appointment will open up an election space for the office of alderman on January 21, when residents return to the polls.
