Sandys North

PLP Justice Minister Michael Scott won the seat for Sandys North in a nail bitting finish to election night.Mr Scott came out on top with 399 votes, narrowly beating out OBA candidate Ray Charlton’s 391 votes.Mr Scott said: “It was an extremely close call. I want to thank the voters of Sandys North for remaining true to the PLP and to myself as their representative.“I want to thank them for still continuing to repose trust in the party and myself since 2004.“This is of course the closest election result. I believe it’s a reflection of a number of things, primarily there was a great deal of doubt introduced about the Government in this campaign and I think it has affected the turn out. It was low for [Constituency] 36 and once the turnout is low it makes it a very close race.”He commended Mr Charlton for putting up a “clean fight” and said he was grateful to voters who came out, allowing him to continue his work in the community.Mr Charlton was visibly disappointed by the loss, but said he worked hard to gain the trust of local voters.“Calling by this vote, it’s an indication that people overall are not happy with the 100 unit pre fabricated the Government and WEDCO have planned so I have indicated to Mr Scott I hope he will help me to save [the Dockyard area].“The people want it renovated and are relying on Mr Scott to do what’s right and serve the people of Sandys. God bless Bermuda and I will be back next time.”There were four spoiled ballots. Voter turnout was only 66 percent as 790 people cast their vote at Somerset Primary yesterday.RESULTS:Michael Scott (PLP): 399Ray Charlton (OBA): 391
